Jeff bounced his leg, waiting for the boss to answer. Heâd told Keller something was up with the pair. Now he waited to see what his boss had discovered. Keller did the digging while he did the messy jobs. But for how civilized Keller liked to act, Jeff knew the truth of his bossâs depravity and just how low heâd sink when necessary.
Turning his back against the wind, he momentarily took his eyes off the barn as ideas for scaring them off raced through his mind. At the very least, they needed to be kept from continuing their investigationâbut watching the pair thus far, he doubted theyâd back down easily.
Keller had insisted he keep an eye on the couple, but the longer he was away from Mary, the itchier he grew.
Finally, Keller answered. âItâs about time you called.â
It was about time he answered. âWhat did you find out?â
âThe man is the grandson, as I assumed, but you were right to think thereâs something more there. He and the woman are special agents.â
Jeff stiffened. âSpecial agents? With the feds?â
âNot exactly. Theyâre both with the Coast Guard Investigative Service.â
Jeff raked a hand through his spiky hair, the gelled tips hard to the touch. âThen why are they investigating here? This has nothing to do with the Coast Guard.â
âInvestigating is what investigators do. Given the fact that the old man was Agent Perryâs grandpa, Iâm sure heâs fully bent on solving this case, which we canât allow to happen. We have too much at stake. Do you understand me?â
Jeff gripped the phone tighter. Now Keller wanted him taking out special agents? He didnât mind the loss of life. What he did mind was going to prison for murdering federal agents.
âDo you understand me?â Keller repeated, his words clipped and cutting. âItâs too dangerous leaving them alive. With their background and training, they could foul everything up. You need to take them out now! You hear me?â
Jeff swallowed hard. âI hear you.â
âThen whatâs the hesitation? You donât want to end up like Layton, do you?â
The man heâd replaced. The man Keller had killed and buried in a dry bed along the Rio Grande.
âNo,â he bit out.
âGood. Make it look like an accident. Two murdered agents would draw far too much attention.â
âThen maybe we should leave them alive.â
âAnd give them time to figure things out? Donât be stupid. We need to nip their investigation in the bud. As long as the accident is well-staged, no one will think any more of it.â
Jeff forced back his scoff. Yeah, because that had worked so well with staging the old manâs murder as a robbery.
âAre we clear?â Keller said, his tone hard and unyielding.
âFine, but my price just went up.â
âDonât mess with me. Youâre getting paid plenty already. Besides, do I need to remind you what Iâm capable of if you disobey my orders?â A harsh edge, one that sliced straight through a man, seethed in Kellerâs voice.
He knew what Keller was capable of. But did Keller know
