Jeff bounced his leg, waiting for the boss to answer. He’d told Keller something was up with the pair. Now he waited to see what his boss had discovered. Keller did the digging while he did the messy jobs. But for how civilized Keller liked to act, Jeff knew the truth of his boss’s depravity and just how low he’d sink when necessary.

Turning his back against the wind, he momentarily took his eyes off the barn as ideas for scaring them off raced through his mind. At the very least, they needed to be kept from continuing their investigation—but watching the pair thus far, he doubted they’d back down easily.

Keller had insisted he keep an eye on the couple, but the longer he was away from Mary, the itchier he grew.

Finally, Keller answered. “It’s about time you called.”

It was about time he answered. “What did you find out?”

“The man is the grandson, as I assumed, but you were right to think there’s something more there. He and the woman are special agents.”

Jeff stiffened. “Special agents? With the feds?”

“Not exactly. They’re both with the Coast Guard Investigative Service.”

Jeff raked a hand through his spiky hair, the gelled tips hard to the touch. “Then why are they investigating here? This has nothing to do with the Coast Guard.”

“Investigating is what investigators do. Given the fact that the old man was Agent Perry’s grandpa, I’m sure he’s fully bent on solving this case, which we can’t allow to happen. We have too much at stake. Do you understand me?”

Jeff gripped the phone tighter. Now Keller wanted him taking out special agents? He didn’t mind the loss of life. What he did mind was going to prison for murdering federal agents.

“Do you understand me?” Keller repeated, his words clipped and cutting. “It’s too dangerous leaving them alive. With their background and training, they could foul everything up. You need to take them out now! You hear me?”

Jeff swallowed hard. “I hear you.”

“Then what’s the hesitation? You don’t want to end up like Layton, do you?”

The man he’d replaced. The man Keller had killed and buried in a dry bed along the Rio Grande.

“No,” he bit out.

“Good. Make it look like an accident. Two murdered agents would draw far too much attention.”

“Then maybe we should leave them alive.”

“And give them time to figure things out? Don’t be stupid. We need to nip their investigation in the bud. As long as the accident is well-staged, no one will think any more of it.”

Jeff forced back his scoff. Yeah, because that had worked so well with staging the old man’s murder as a robbery.

“Are we clear?” Keller said, his tone hard and unyielding.

“Fine, but my price just went up.”

“Don’t mess with me. You’re getting paid plenty already. Besides, do I need to remind you what I’m capable of if you disobey my orders?” A harsh edge, one that sliced straight through a man, seethed in Keller’s voice.

He knew what Keller was capable of. But did Keller know
